Garnets have been used as gemstones for thousands of years. They come in many colors. They are generally very clean gems and are not artificially enhanced in any way. Their excellent hardness, 7 - 7.5 on Mohs' scale, makes them strong and easy to wear.

Garnet are a group of silicate minerals. The red garnets, mostly pyrope and almandine, and the purplish red or rose colored rhodolite garnet, are used for the Sun as a substitute for ruby.

Green varieties, such as Tsavorite, are excellent gemstones for Mercury.
